Heat Waves
The reading
A song about loving someone you can no longer help, where summer mirages stand in for the lies the mind tells itself about a dying relationship

Heat Waves: A Mirage of a Relationship That Won't Cool Down
The song is about watching someone you love suffer, realising you are not the cure, and choosing to leave anyway. The title image, the wet shimmer that appears on a hot road and vanishes as you approach, is the central metaphor: a love that looks like relief until you get close enough to see it isn't there.
Released on 28 June 2020 as part of the Dreamland project, 'Heat Waves' arrived in the first summer of the pandemic, a season when long, indistinguishable days and a thick sense of distance from other people gave the song an accidental second life. Lead singer Dave Bayley writes from a first-person voice that sounds confessional but slips between the literal and the hallucinatory, which suits a song whose subject is denial.
A daydream that won't resolve
The opening lines set up obsession without drama: thoughts of someone that arrive nightly, an admission that he doesn't want to be thinking of them but does. The repeated 'Don't wanna, but I think about you' is the song in miniature, a person who has decided the situation is over and cannot stop returning to it anyway.
Then comes the mirage. 'Road shimmer, wiggling the vision / Heat, heat waves, I'm swimming in a mirror' is the only place the song lets the imagery run loose. The vision wobbles, the road becomes a reflective surface, and the narrator is suspended inside the illusion. It's a clean equivalence: the relationship looks like water from a distance, and he's been swimming in it.
The turn toward honesty
The chorus then gets very plain. 'Heat waves been faking me out / Can't make you happier now' lays out the whole problem in two lines. He has been deceived (by his own hope, by summer, by the way the other person used to look at him) and he has come to a quiet conclusion: he is no longer capable of providing what this person needs.
The second verse pulls the camera back. The detail about putting something on the TV 'so we never think about you and me' is one of the song's sharpest moments, the way couples in trouble use background noise as a buffer. The Hollywood reflection that follows reads less like a literal location than a sense of watching their own relationship play out as if on a screen, finally legible. Then the verdict: 'You just need a better life than this / You need something I can never give.' The fake water reappears, then disappears with nightfall, as if the day's illusions burn off when the lights go down.
Letting go without wanting to
The bridge is where the song stops daydreaming and starts speaking directly. He acknowledges the other person is saying loving things, and he is leaving anyway because he believes they'd be better with someone new. He doesn't pretend this is noble. 'I don't wanna be alone' and 'You know it hurts me too' admit that the goodbye costs him as well, and the image of the partner crying, broken, is the closest the song comes to flinching. 'One more and then I say goodbye' delays the ending by one beat, which is exactly how these endings actually go.
The final new lyric, wondering what the partner dreams of and wishing he could give them a face that is 'perfectly un-sad,' clarifies what the relationship has become for him: a project of trying, and failing, to make someone happy. Then the chorus loops, the road shimmers again, and the song dissolves back into the mirage it started in. The resolution is that there isn't one.
Why it stuck
'Heat Waves' became a slow-burning global hit through 2021 and into 2022, spreading on TikTok and eventually topping the Billboard Hot 100 well over a year after release, an unusually long climb. Part of the appeal is musical, the lo-fi pulse and Bayley's high, slightly woozy vocal, but part is structural: it is a breakup song that refuses the usual postures of anger or self-pity. It just describes the temperature.

"Heat Waves"
Last night, all I think about is you
Don't stop, baby, you can walk through
Don't wanna, but I think about you
You know that I'm never gonna lose
Road shimmer, wiggling the vision
Heat, heat waves, I'm swimming in a mirror
Road shimmer, wiggling the vision
Heat, heat waves, I'm swimmin' in a-
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Can't make you happier now
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Can't make you happier now
Usually, I put something on TV
So we never think about you and me
But today, I see our reflections clearly in Hollywood
Laying on the screen
You just need a better life than this
You need something I can never give
Fake water all across the road
It's gone now, the night has come, but
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Can't make you happier now
You can't fight it, you can't breathe
You say something so loving, but
Now I gotta let you go
You'll be better off with someone new
I don't wanna be alone
You know it hurts me too
You look so broken when you cry
One more and then I say goodbye
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Can't make you happier now
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Can't make you happier now
I just wonder what you're dreaming of
When you sleep and smile so comfortable
I just wish that I could give you that
That look that's perfectly un-sad
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Heat waves been faking me out
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Can't make you happier now
Sometimes all I think about is you
Late nights in the middle of June
Heat waves been faking me out
Can't make you happier now
Road shimmer wiggling the vision
Heat, heat waves, I'm swimming in a mirror
Road shimmer wiggling the vision
Heat, heat waves, I'm swimming in a mirror
